The Season was the social calendar of the aristocracy and the wealthy, running from spring into high summer, when families left their country estates for London. Its centerpiece was the debutante β€” a young lady of good family making her formal entrance into society, presented at court in white with feathers in her hair, curtsying to the sovereign.

The diary was relentless: balls and dinner parties, the opera, Ascot, Henley, and Cowes, all played out in new dresses ordered for the purpose. Queen Charlotte's Ball, first held in 1780, became the traditional glitter of a debutante's year.

Beneath the glamour, the Season was business β€” the business of marrying well. It was where fortunes met titles and where the upper classes quietly renewed themselves each year, one dance at a time.
