CBC's Murdoch Mysteries (2008โ€“) follows Detective William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) of the Toronto Constabulary in the 1890s. A scientifically minded policeman, he solves murders with fingerprinting, ultraviolet light, and contraptions decades ahead of their time.

The period detail is Canadiana Victoriana: gaslit Toronto streets, the dawn of the automobile and the telephone, and a parade of real historical figures โ€” Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Arthur Conan Doyle โ€” crossing Murdoch's path. The show treats the 1890s as an age of invention, with Murdoch inventing half of it.

Victorian fans love it as comfort-viewing Victoriana โ€” clever, warm-hearted, and endlessly inventive. It is also one of the longest-running scripted dramas in Canadian television history.
