The Paradise

BBC One's The Paradise is loosely based on Émile Zola's 1883 novel Au Bonheur des Dames (The Ladies' Delight), transplanted to a fictional department store in 1870s northern England. Shop girl Denise Lovett (Joanna Vanderham) arrives from the countryside and catches the eye of the store's magnetic owner, John Moray (Emun Elliott).
The show understands that the department store was Victorian modernity made visible: plate-glass windows, fixed prices, lavish displays, and shopping as respectable leisure for middle-class women. The Paradise itself — all brass, glass, and gaslight — is the real star.
Victorian fans love it for dramatizing a genuine social revolution. It shows how retail transformed women's public lives, high streets, and class relations in a single generation — with a sweeping romance folded in.
